The Land
Our community includes land from the three properties. Songaia has 13 residential units located on an 11-acre plot with a gentle west-facing slope. At the top of the slope is four acres of second growth Douglas fir interspersed with alder and western red cedar. The bottom of the slope is approximately three acres of grassy meadow, garden and fruit trees. Also, there is additional adjoining land to the immediate South (Life Song Commons), and West (New Earth Song).
The organic garden was begun in the summer of 1987 with the installation of raised beds in the grassy area west of the common house. The garden nearly doubled in size when the garden was expanded into the former horse paddock to the west of the established garden. Fruit and nut tree plantings were placed to the north and west of the garden and on the south end of the property.
Recent development of the land is described in Our Permaculture Approach.
