FROM GARDEN TO TABLE
Do you ever dream of growing, harvesting, cooking and eating much of the produce from your very own garden? It happens here at Songaia! Our garden manager, passionate community gardeners and volunteers work tirelessly to grow over 1 1/2 tons of organic veggies and fruit annually. Our cooks send in their menus each week and make requests such as, "We need 2 bags of greens, bok choy and beets for dinner" or "when will the potatoes and garlic be ready to harvest?". It magically appears harvested and washed in the kitchen in time for dinner prep. Or, we might see a note from the gardeners with a list of items available from the garden this week - "please use carrots, chard, chives, tomatoes, and on and on .... Talk about FRESH from the garden ...we have it all!

THE FOOD PROGRAM
It 's six o'clock, and you can hear the beloved Quaker song: 'Tis a gift to be simple, 'tis a gift to be free... . . " rising from the Common House at Songaia before everyone sits down for the evening meal.
We serve five common meals a week and stock the community food pantry with many items we know our members might want to prepare for breakfasts, lunches, and weekend dinners at home ... all of this for $170 per month per adult member. (Yes, that's per month.) The fee for children is on a sliding scale depending on their age. We believe it's possible for members to live well on our community-purchased food alone, without needing to purchase additional food, although of course they can and often do. Our emphasis is on good, nutritious, food and intentional buying--and organic wherever possible, at least the top 15 veggies/fruits that carry high pesticide levels.
Eating, cooking and cleaning up together for 5 meals a week is a primary point of contact for most of us in our community. We get to know each other (and whether we like KALE or not). But most importantly, we learn a basic principle in community living, it is not whether everyone is cared for equally, but, rather, is everyone receiving ENOUGH.
